SPARC Presentation

Today at the SPARC Festival, I attended one of the Honors Presentations for the study of communications. The Presenter was Victoria Tyler, and her presentation was titled Do Likes Really Matter, An Examination of Self-Image on Instagram.

The presenter opened the presentation discussing the history of social media and its development over time as well as the premise behind the creation of Instagram. She stated that many people enjoyed this social media app because we tend to prefer quick visuals over reading an updated social status or post. However, with only using photos to show our online persona, it can cause many negative effects on the individual.

She was able to get over 200 participants from a wide age range to take an online survey with questions she had formed regarding self-image, and mood after using Instagram. Her findings showed that women are generally more impacted by Instagram then men. They feel more weight to look a certain way or have a particular body type that fits the standards that society currently holds. Victoria was also able to determine that all ages were influenced by Instagram and discovered that both young and the old found their self-confidence and self-image was changed after closing the social media app.

With more data she may have been able to have more accurate results, however, her findings were still significant in depicting just how much Instagram has on our own self-worth.
